Derbi SM50

2002 Derbi SuperMotard 50
What is the hype all about?

Before we get into the Derbi deal SuperBikers2 would like to send a big THANK YOU to Wayne Petrie from Petrie Motorsports for inviting us out to put on a mini motard exhibition during his spring open house. Spectators got a chance to see Motard racing and we were able to run our first battle of the mini's. Please stop in and visit Wayne for all your KTM, watercraft, and snowmobile needs.

NOTE: The pictures on this page are of great quality and may take a minute or so to load.

The 2002 Derbi SM50 is a Spanish built 49cc motorcycle imported into the United States by Cycle Imports. The Derbi company has been building world class scooters for many years and just like any good bike, people love to race them.

The 2002 Derbi SM50 is the first in its class to offer some great innovations.

Twin spar frame, ridged swing arm, inverted Showa forks, stiff rear suspension, front and rear disk brakes (front brakes are unbelievable), braided brake lines, aggressive Motard stance, comfortable saddle height, full street lighting kit complete with speedo, tach and warning lights, tough handle bars, six speed trans, and of course the 17" wheels.

How did I set up the Derbi SM50 to be competitive with Honda's bullet proof XR100 and the torque of Yamaha's TTR125L?

1) I replaced the stock exhaust system with a race system supplied by Cycle Imports 2) I raised the needle in the carb to its highest setting. 3) I replaced the two stroke injector oil with Silkolene Comp 2 Plus synthetic oil. 4) I put some good gas in the tank. 5) I adjusted the air mixture of the carb until I had a nice light brown spark plug. 6) I replaced the fork oil with some 20w.

Impressions:
What a *&@# blast to ride! The brakes are sick... I would love to see King Gary do a stoppie on this machine. As long as you are in the R's between 7,000 & 12,000 you are hanging with or passing the two contenders. It is definitely about sliding the backend and fanning the clutch to stay in the power. If you are a four stroke person (like I am ) the new power band will be something to get used to, but once you figure it out the joys of this little Motarder really shine through. Comfort, brakes and handling are what really drives the Derbi to the top. I have owned and pounded all three bikes tested and feel compelled to tell you that they are all great bikes. The Derbi just offers us SuperMotard fans a competitive cost effective solution for our mini motard needs.

The next article will include results from testing the 74cc kit and 21mm carb I am about to install.

Please post your questions and comments in the Bulletin Board.
